The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) provides a broad range of services to assist in small business growth and expansion.

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE SERVICES

bullet MEDC’s Customer Contact Center is a centralized intake service assisting customers or providing referrals to the appropriate source for follow-up service.  It is a one-stop source for license and permit information.

MEDC’s Customer Contact Center, in collaboration with the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) network, routes inquiries on starting a business to the caller’s nearest small business center for assistance.

MEDC partners with the SBTDC network’s 12 regional offices to provide direct counseling, training and advocacy for new, existing and small technology businesses.

Account managers assist companies with a wide array of services including site location and workforce development, among many others, customized to their specific needs.  They specialize in providing seamless delivery of services, including coordination of efforts with local developers.

Michigan Business Ombudsman cuts red tape, expedites permits and license applications, solves problems between businesses and state government, and answers questions about state laws, rules and procedures.

Small Business Outreach provides up-to-date information about services and programs available to public and private sector organizations that advocate for, and/or provide services to, small companies and minority- and women-owned businesses.

Compensation Cost Control assists employers in finding ways to cut their costs for workers’ compensation coverage.

MEDC, with its partner, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center, helps small-to-medium-sized manufacturers improve productivity, quality and competitiveness.

MEDC’s Technology Development Services, working with other technology partners, targets tech-based small companies and entrepreneurs in the IT, life sciences, homeland security and advanced manufacturing sectors.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES ASSISTANCE

MEDC works in partnership with Michigan’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center Network to help small businesses learn how to sell to government.  Workshops are held throughout the year and around the state on how to bid for contracts with various units of federal and state government, as well as the private sector.

Export Services assists small-to-medium-sized companies requiring initial export planning assistance and those already geared up for export.  Services include assistance with matching products and services with worldwide leads, assessment of a company’s readiness for exporting, as well as counseling and coordination of training in all phases of the export process.

MEDC’s online Business Directory offers small firms the opportunity to market their business on the MEDC Web site and creates new opportunities for expanding the company’s market.

WORKFORCE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

The Economic Development Job Training Program helps companies train or retrain workers to meet marketplace needs.   

MEDC provides businesses with information and referrals about state and federal workforce development programs.
